Art Deco

Today we’re shining our Style Spotlight on Art Deco Fashion! The Art Deco aesthetic is characterized by geometric shapes, long lines, and ornate, exaggerated accessories.

Most people will recognize it as the Flapper look of the 1920s, with straight-laying dresses and fringe, drop waists, long strands of pearls, and dangling earrings.

The style matches the changing attitudes of the era, especially for women, who were beginning to cast off convention to reinvent the way they expressed themselves.

Men also found power in geometric shapes and designs, and as a result, pinstripes, wide lapels, straight legged pants, and long overcoats came to define men’s fashion of the period.

Even the architecture of the 1920s and 1930s followed the Art Deco style. The Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building in New York City serve as famous examples, implementing long lines, geometric patterns, and towering height to create dramatic additions to the New York skyline, as well as to communicate the prestige and skill of the architects and designers who built them.

Television and movies such as “Peaky Blinders” and the most recent interpretation of “The Great Gatsby” have helped to shake off the dust of the vintage aesthetic, restoring some of its sparkle to appeal to contemporary society. More than anything, Art Deco is a look that communicates an attitude of self-assurance, free spirits, and even a healthy dose of hedonism. Personally, we are positively jazzed for this style to make a comeback!
